::Ping Pong 2008:: End of Week 1

Hi Everyone -

Soooo, how's it going? I've only received match scores from three of you, out of 45, so, get to playing!

Or, if you've played, send me your scores!!

All round robin matches MUST be finished by next week.

Also, I've heard that some people are having trouble getting people in their groups to respond to e-mails. RESPOND TO YOUR GROUP MEMBERS!

ok, now, go have fun. (and SEND ME YOUR MATCH RESULTS!)

Sydney

p.s. there is a rumor that there may be a faculty bracket added to the tournament. I cannot confirm or deny these rumors.

Fall 2008 Logo

::Ping Pong Tournament Fall 2008: Rules of Play::

round robin groups:

  • Each player must play every player in his or her group. When a match is finished, record the score and send an e-mail to Sydney
  • Forfeits will not be counted as a win or loss for either player.
  • In the event of a tie between two or more players in a Round Robin group, a period of several days will be allotted in order to schedule a tiebreaker.
  • After the Round Robin is finished, the winners of the groups will enter a single elimination tournament.

scoring:

  • A point is won by a player when the opponent cannot hit the ball over the net and onto the other side of the table.
  • A game is won by being the first player to win 11 points, and be at least 2 points ahead of his or her opponent. If both players have won 10 points, then the first player to get a 2 point lead wins the game.
  • A match is the best of 5 games. The first player to win 3 games is the overall winner.
  • The score begins at 0-0, and the server will serve first. Each player gets to serve for two points in a row, and then the other player has to serve.
  • The server must serve the ball so that it touches his or her side of the table once, then bounces over or around the net, and then touches his or her opponent's side of the table. A serve that touches the net assembly (the net, net posts, and net clamps) on the way, but still touches his or her side first and then the opponent's side on the second bounce, is called a let serve (or just let) and must be replayed, with no change to the score. There is no limit on how many lets the server can serve in a row.
  • When a point is won, that player adds one to his or her score.

timeline:
  • The round robin will start October 13
  • Semi-Final and Final matches to be played November 7th, after the Open House lecture

::Ping Pong Tournament Fall 2008: Round Robin::

The tournament starts Monday, October 13th. Here are the round robin rules:
1. You have been split into eight groups. You are incharge of setting up your own round robin matches.
2. Round Robin Matches:
 a) You must play everyone else in your group once.
 b) For each match, you must send your score to me, Sydney, at the e-mail address I sent you. Only scores sent to me will be counted
 c) The top two players from each group will move on to the single elimination tournament
 d) The two players will be determined by number of matches won; if two players tie for third, there will be a sudden death match to figure out a winner
 e) If people don't have paddles, the tournament will have two on hand to be used.
 f) All round robin matches must be completed by Monday, October 26th. You must also send me all the scores ASAP, as in, 11:59 Monday evening, so I can set up the single elimination rounds.
Good luck, play hard, and don't forget to e-mail me your scores!
Sydney
p.s. If there are any issues (people not responding to e-mails, cheating, etc) the guilty party will be forced to translate all Scott CohenProjective Geometry lectures into layman's terms for the first years this semester. Don't let this happen to you! Play by the rules!
